A Diatribe on Bathrooms

The bathroom is my favorite room in the house - it always has been, ever since I was a child. I wonder if my parents remember the hours I used to spend in the bathroom, especially on Friday nights. It sounds random, but I realized when I was young that the bathroom is the only room in the house that one could comfortably live in. Think about it, without a toilet, hygiene would be a serious issue - in a bathroom you have a toilet, bathtub for cleaning and sink for water...what more could you need?? Well I had a list - literally, I had a plan of what I needed to live in my bathroom - I decided that I could comfortably live there for at least a year - I had a mental list of what I needed, where the cans of food and microwave would go, how much bedding I would need - I would of course sleep in the tub. A TV would be a must...not only that, but I planned different scenarios of why I had to live in the bathroom for a year - many of them involving Nazis - the idea of Adventist persecution also played a huge role. In preparation I tried to sleep in the tub one night - I was old enough that I was too tall to stretch out and the faucet dripped getting my blanket wet - it was a disappointing experiment.
I don't have tons of memories before like 8 years old, but many involve the bathroom. Allison and I used to share the toilet when we were super little and both had to go - we would sit back to back sideways on the toilet - it sounds strange now, but when you are like 3 and 4 you feel like geniuses for thinking of it!! We also thought that it was perfectly normal to teach classes of imaginary students while sitting on the toilet - I may have only done this but think Allison did to. I never had imaginary friends, besides my class that I would teach while sitting on the toilet. I have no idea why I am sharing this on the worldwide web, I just think it's interesting. Perhaps a psychiatrist or someone will read this and tell me what that says about me as a child and now.
So back to present - I love baths as well - I think they are underappreciated. Critics of baths talk about soaking in one's own filth but I think of it as getting super clean - if you want a clean pot, what do you do?? you soak it of course!! It's also relaxing and warm...I have a close friend who always takes baths and hate showers - I think that this eccentricity is one of my favorite things about her (second only to her love of running)!
When I journey into the world of home ownership, I think the bathroom will be the most important feature. I mean the kitchen is up there as well, so I may sacrifice the bathroom for a stellar kitchen, but a bathroom remodel will be a requirement. I want a deep tub, like the old fashioned garden ones without an overflow valve where the water and bubbles can be up to your neck. Sounds heavenly right??
This all came about when I decided to spend an hour curled up in a quilt on the floor of our bathroom reading "The Time Traveler's Wife"...Something about the bathroom brings comfort, a quilt, warm cup of tea and book and I can be happy for an afternoon. I wonder if anyone else in the world loves this vital room as much as I???
I think that's all for today's diatribe on bathrooms - I feel better for getting all of that out in the open.
